I think it's a conspiracy to make u get applecare. I had this issue and thanks to this tip I fixed it. Also had a less than legitimate cdrom stuck in the drive that would not come out, had to have a buddy at work who is a mac pro basically jump through hoops and hold all kinds of buttons down while restarting several times to get it to come out. damn apple!
